Mortal Thoughts
The tulips bloomed early this year, even for tulips.
Now they're splayed in the morning sun,
petals almost parallel to the wall holding
their earthy womb in place.
By tomorrow they'll be a pretty memory,
leaves and stalks left naked until next year,
when they'll perform their miracle again.
I wonder if, deep inside the living caskets
that feed them during their long sleep,
they dream of spring and know they'll be
returning to sunshine and birdsong
and admiration, or are they like us -
ignorant of what comes after our
brief and gaudy magnificence is stilled?
