Reddish Egret egretta rufescens: The most active feeder of our herons and egrets, the reddish egret can often be seen shading the water with its wings, a behavior known as canopy feeding. This technique probably makes it easier for the bird to see its prey and may even attract fish into the shade.
A native of St.Petersburg, Florida, Jim first became serious about photography at Midway Island Naval Station in 1971, where he served as crew chief of a sea/air rescue helicopter. The island was and remains a wildlife preserve that serves as a rookery for thousands of sea birds, most notably the Laysan Albatross. While at Midway, Jim assisted a team of Department of Interior biologists in a project to tag Hawaiian monk seals and sea turtles, and introduce some Laysan finches from another Pacific island to Pearl and Hermes Reef. College life, work, and parenthood took Jim away from photography until 2003 when he began experimenting with his first digital camera.
