Fantastic piece of art

This piece is fantastic. I love the look of encaustic, but for all the reasons you just said...I doubt I will ever work with it or buy a piece of it. I have mica flakes...but they are very small and delicate, I find them hard to work with but maybe I haven't found the right way to do it yet. It adds wonderful dimension to your piece. =)

Regina Valluzzi replied:

I've been buying big bags of the extra large flaked mica. It's not as fragile as it seems - most of the flakes will bend before breaking

Clever use of an encaustic likes acrylic mica media!!

Regina Valluzzi replied:

Actually I have a humongous bag of large flake mica flakes about 1 cm across. I add it into media, layer it on top, glue it to things - whatever makes the painting. The flakes are more substantial and I get more flexibile use from them than I would in a ready-made mica medium. What's the deal with encaustic? I realize that since youu see the hard wax and it's not melted for very long there's an instant gratification that one doesn't get with acrylic, and the color shift isn't an issue with wax. But color shift can be compensated - just a learn around. Instant gratification can cloud thought processes. And wax - man do the properties of wax just suck oily wax rocks! It scratches easily, has no structural integrity, melts in the sun (!!), the vaunted encaustic "film clarity" is actually cloudier than the CHarles River after a rainstorm (bleh), you only get one consistency to work with, It's not the most chemically stable substance in the world, and for all those lovely non-features you get to spend your days burning yourself with a heat gun. Yay encaustic. Prefer real PLASTIC.

Artist's Description

Surf study uses mixed media and novel applications of conventional acrylic painting media to "reinvent" the structure of a common landscape painting theme. Seascapes are a popular painting subject. A talented conventional landscape (or seascape) painter will pay great attention to laying out and painting in the color subtleties and patterns of surf. Surf study approximates those same painted patterns using transparent layers of poured and swirled media over layers of clear reflective mica. The mica creates a frothy lamellar texture, while also reflecting the light through the transparent paint film in unexpected refractory patterns. The swirled transparent media have embedded color patterns arising from fluid dynamic effects within the paint that closely mimic the fluidity and movement of water. Overall Surf Study creates an intensely tactile "present" impression, with a paint film that uses the same play of light as roiling water to create an immediacy for the viewer. And it's...
