Artist's Description
Tarantula Nebula. Telescope image of the Tarantula Nebula (NGC 2070, 30 Doradus, upper centre) and its surroundings. This emission nebula lies 160,000 light years from Earth, in the constellation of Dorado. Slightly to the lower-right, a web of filaments harbours the famous supernova SN 1987A. Many other nebulae (reddish) are visible in the image, as well as a cluster of young stars (left) known as NGC 2100. Imaged by the Wide Field Imager (WFI) of the 2.2-metre telescope at La Silla Observatory, Chile.
