Artist's Description

Teaching electromagnetism. Group of young women studying electromagnets in a school classroom. This lesson is taking place in Washington DC, USA, and is thought to have taken place in around 1899. The theory of electromagnetism had developed throughout the 19th century due to advances made by physicists such as Faraday, Henry, Maxwell, Hertz and Tesla. By the end of the century, applications included its use in telegraphy (shown on the blackboard). This photograph is by US photographer Frances Benjamin Johnston (1864-1952). Her photographic survey of Washington DC schools was displayed at the Paris Exposition of 1900.
