Thanatos was the personification of death without violence.

He was a creature of a chilling darkness, usually depicted as a young winged. Homer and Hesiod made him son of Nix, night, and twin of Hypnos, implying that both brothers were arguing every night who would take every man, or that sleep each night canceled mortals in an attempt to imitate his older brother . It plays a small role in myths, as was much in the shadow of Hades, the lord of the dead.

The two brothers, famous for the speed of their actions, were commissioned to Zeus to carry the body of his son Sarpedon to Licia, that he might receive from their family burial he deserved. The king of the gods had granted his son a life spanning three generations, and that ended when Sarpedon went to the Trojan War to the front of the Lycian, where he was killed by Patroclus.
