Artist's Description

When a Chinook Wind blows, parts of Montana and Alberta experience a rapid rise in temperature, snow can melt in hours and temperatures can raise from 10 degrees below in the morning to 10 degrees above by noon. This scene was painted between Cockrane and the Rockies on Alberta's old highway # 1 back in the 1970's while on a trip to Sunshine B.C. ski area. The weather had been cold for a prolonged period of time and the Chinook was a welcome phenomenon. This type of weather happens when strong winds, blowing off of the Pacific drop their moisture on the west side of the Rockies and the then warm dry wind blows on Alberta's foothills usually from Calgary south to Montana. A Chinook Arch can often be seen from Calgary south as a long arch of clear sky forming from the clouds just east of the mountains while areas not too far east are still in a deep freeze. A favourite old timer's story is about riding a dog sled fast enough because the snow was melting faster right behind the sleigh.
