One must have a few failures before one recognizes and tastes the sweet success. This is a favorite subject of mine because of my memories of the real circuses. My mother and uncle would take my brothers and I tote circus when it came to town and set up in a field on the outskirts of Evansville. Elephants pulling the masts up for the circus tents.What a sight. A circus season is a lesson in grueling predictability. It's performing the same act over and over again. It's packing up the trailer, stuffing the big top into a truck, and moving to another city. It's waking up in the same trailer, but in a different city, just to repeat what you did the day before. But in the midst of all this hard work and monotony are magical moments that spring up like mushrooms after a hard rain. Some of these special memories come under the hot glare of the circus lights, but many happen in the back lot or on the city streets that play host (and semi-permanent home) to the personalities and talents that c...

Charlie Spear was born in 1948 in the Midwest. The era of Modern Art was in full swing with the Sixties generating an artistic smorgasbord of art styles and new media. Much of his early career was spent learning about art through teaching art in H.S. and College. His imagery grew out of early influences in television and graphic media. Spear paints both as a landscape painter and sometimes as an abstractionist which characterizes his ecclectic tendency. Exploring the art media's physical qualities is an important element in his style coupled with a love of an impressionistic drawing style. The result is a charged surface of automatic line energy and raw color expression. His work is a reflection of familiar events in his life...
