I bought this in the greeting card form. I have been purchasing cards from Fine Art America for two or three years. Covid might have been some of the reason for looking for cards on the internet. Shops were closed. The main reason I buy cards from FAA is because I got tired of looking for cards at the usual card shops. I could find cards (sometimes) that looked good on the outside but the verses were terrible or it was the other way around...terrible on the outside but maybe a decent verse inside. I pick cards from FAA that fit with the occasion. I figure I can write something on the inside as good as any card company could. I wouldn't buy these cards if I didn't think they were wonderful. The cards are beautiful and excellent quality and the envelopes are equality as good. I am glad I can make a copy of what I've bought so I can keep track of who gets what card. I don't want to send the same card to someone twice. In this case, the card is going to someone for Mother's Day.

Based on Lakota, Navajo and Kiowa bear legends, this oil painting by Dawn Senior-Trask, depicts The Great Bear of the Lakota, who sleeps at the edge of the world. Symbolizing wisdom, the ice-bear sleeps with one eye open and knows everything that is happening in the world. He sleeps in a sweat lodge, for it was the bear who brought knowledge of the sweat lodge ceremony to the Lakota. He also brought them music.
Among the minerals under the earth are images of Tingling Maiden (of Navajo lore), who mistakenly believed that her twelve brothers had murdered her husband, Coyote. Using the powers Coyote had given her, she turned into a Great Bear and buried her heart and her breath, so she could not be killed. She killed all but her youngest brother, but he found her heart and her breath and killed her. The parts of the Great Bears body became the sacred bears of the four sacred mountains, and became the yucca fruits and pinyon nuts upon which the Navajo people depended for...
I have been an artist since I was knee high to a short-horned locust. My dad, Willoughby Senior (FAA) was a professional artist and writer and I have stepped in his shoes since I was born, though he drew horses better than I did when I was a kid. My family lived in a hand-hewn log cabin we built ourselves in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains and had no water or electricity. I love my life with my husband and family in Wyoming among the horses, gophers, deer, antelope, coyotes, red-tailed hawks, and the wild landscape. My work is driven by the land, animals, wild plants and birds I have come to know so well. Hummingbirds still try to get nectar from my upturned fingers. My artwork consists of all these things and more...

This is so wonderful, I love that the story it tells is based on Native American legends. the tiny figures with the stars, the geometrical sleeping bear, and the symbols beneath him. Really amazing work.

Dawn A great work of art and the bear story is very interesting, very nice.

This is a fascinating and powerful painting in subject matter, imagery, and composition. I found your information about the Native mythology so interesting. For me the wise ice bear sleeping with 1 eye open has a timeless feel. It is as if he knows of trouble with the earth and cannot fully go to sleep or perhaps he is a caretaker of his people or of the earth. The Blackfeet also have legends around the bear sleeping and I did a retelling of one of them, When Bear Stole the Chinook. Thank you Dawn for your authentic, stunning art. You are a true original.
