I wrote this poem and illustrated it when I was seventeen. I have now revised the poem slightly and created a new drawing for it. Even at that age I had already lived through many, many experiences and encounters with wild animals of all kinds and in all kinds of places and weather conditions. Growing up in my family's log cabin in the rugged foothills of Wyoming's Snowy Range was a true gift! In those days I could look out the cabin window and see a dozen huge mule deer stags like this one vying for does, and a mountain lion who denned in a nearby ravine often caused panic among the wild herds.

I have been an artist since I was knee high to a short-horned locust. My dad, Willoughby Senior (FAA) was a professional artist and writer and I have stepped in his shoes since I was born, though he drew horses better than I did when I was a kid. My family lived in a hand-hewn log cabin we built ourselves in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains and had no water or electricity. I love my life with my husband and family in Wyoming among the horses, gophers, deer, antelope, coyotes, red-tailed hawks, and the wild landscape. My work is driven by the land, animals, wild plants and birds I have come to know so well. Hummingbirds still try to get nectar from my upturned fingers. My artwork consists of all these things and more...
