Artist's Description

A vintage timbered building and passageway in Framlingham, Suffolk, England from the Tudor period (1485-1603 AD) reminded me of an old nursery rhyme: There was a crooked man, and he walked a crooked mile. He found a crooked sixpence upon a crooked stile. He bought a crooked cat, which caught a crooked mouse. And they all lived together in a little crooked house. The crooked man is reputed to be Scottish General Sir Alexander Leslie, signer of a Covenant securing religious and political freedom for Scotland during the reign of Charles I of England. The crooked mile referred to the English/Scottish border, and they all lived together in a little crooked house. At a time of great animosity they had come to agreement. Copyright 2009 Ann Horn.
