Artist's Description

The old trestle in Murphy, North Carolina stands as a relic of days gone by. The old L&N Railroad passed through here carrying freight and people in years past. Named for the line that spanned from Louisville to Nashville, the depot is just south of the trestle less than a half mile. The tracks are still being maintained in hopes that the line will some day reopen and become a tourist train through the Smoky Mountains. This line follows the Valley River which empties at this very spot into the Hiwassee River. Murphy is where the Trail of Tears began when the Cherokee Indians were removed from the mountains of Appalachia and traveled by foot out west. Many died on this journey, a very sad time in our United States of America's history.

About Debra and Dave Vanderlaan

Debra and Dave Vanderlaan

"After 30 years in the floral and plant nursery business, Debra and Dave Vanderlaan sold both businesses and turned their life-long photography hobby into full-time obsession. The Vanderlaans are both award-winning photographers and well-known both domestically and internationally. Many of their images showcase the tropical landscapes of South Florida and the mountain vistas of the Smoky Mountains and many gorgeous scenes around the world. Their motto is Celebrate Life and that seemed a natural name for their gallery. Their images have been displayed in the Smithsonian Museum in Washington, DC, at the North Carolina Museum of Art, Turchin Art Center in Boone NC, the Palm Beach Photography Museum, and of course at The MAC: Murphy Art...
