The term 'Tulipomania', or 'Tulip Mania,' refers to a period in history when Europeans paid exorbitant prices for tulip bulbs, and tulips in one's garden was a sign of high social status. Even the exquisite Enlightenment-era paintings by Dutch masters, for example, were less expensive than owning the flowers themselves (see 'The Tulip' by Anna Pavord). Tulips were so highly priced that it was less costly to buy a painting of them in lieu of having the actual flowers on display in one's garden. These magnificent magenta double tulips were at the Chicago Botanic Garden, Illinois, during spring.
