Artist's Description
Ulysses feigning madness. 1895 illustration depicting Ulysses (Odysseus), the legendary Greek king of Ithaca, ploughing a beach to feign madness in an attempt to avoid joining the Trojan war. This display was for the benefit of the party sent to fetch him to war. One of that party, Palamedes, placed Ulysses's infant son on the beach in front of the horse and ox pulling the plough. When Ulysses turned the animals to prevent his son from being trampled his deceit was exposed.
