The A-10 warthog is an aircraft built around a gun. It intended to protect troops on the ground and is a tank killer, designed around the GAU-8 Avenger, a heavy rotary cannon which forms the aircraft's primary armament (and is, to date, the heaviest rotary cannon ever mounted on an aircraft). It is able to fire it's 11-1/2", 30 caliber rounds 4000 rounds a minute approximately 70 per second, it is second to none as a close combat aircraft. The plane is popular with it's pilots because they sit in a 1,200 lb bathtub of titanium able to protect. and was designed with survivability as a priority, with protective measures in place which enable the aircraft to continue flying even after taking significant damage.
