This painting makes me happy!! The colors are really fun and, like his other pieces I own, expertly painted. I want to live in this cottage and walk into the ocean. Ordered it on canvas - well executed. Thank you for the smiles!

this is the first painting of a subseries of marlene's hebrew series called "dvarim."
dvar means a word. this word "vayikrah" is the name of the third book of Moses and the name of the first portion of this book.
the letter on the left is purposely smaller to show moses' humility.
covert symbolism: red is god. the image of the torah (with pomegranates atop) is next to god with his words traveling through the image.
this painting was designed for a bar mitzvah student, hence the clean slate on the right side of the painting. his hebrew name is shmuel...bibilically, shmuel was the last of our judges (allusion of scales) and the first prophet to share his dvarim from god in the land of israel.
the red column emanatinb for the letter "yud" represents the ten commandments, 10 being the numerical equivalent for that letter.

I like the fact that you have found expression of religious themes through abstraction. Although I don't fully understand the expression, I can certainly appreciate it.
Marlene Burns replied:
thank you, david, just read the description. ;)

thanks for favoriting this painting, janeen!
Michael Friedman
Beautiful work, Marlene. The word 'va-yi-kar' (with no alef) is found in Parshat Balak when HaShem speaks to Bilaam. It has the sense of 'it happened' but it wasn't deserved. As you point out, Moshe was too humble to receive any more stature than Bilaam. Your image is a wonderful representation of this Midrash!
Marlene Burns replied:
thank you for your insight, michael. i am being commissioned to do all of the books this year...can hardly wait!
Dale Ford
God's given you a wonderful gift, Marlene. Thank you for sharing it.
Marlene Burns replied:
thank you, dale, for your kind comment. it has taken 40 years to merge to two passions, but well worth the wait. all in its own good time....

I love this painting and the next one, Halleluyah. Your wonderful descriptions of the meaning and significance of each of your Judaica series show the depth of your knowledge and are works of art of their own. Y' asher kochayich!

Fanatastic Marlene! Love the flow and connectivity. The description is SO very helpful.
Marlene Burns
daughter dear, thank you! the flow is so important to the meaning of the piece...god's words flowing from the source to torah and then to man....
