Rick Silas
Medium
Sculpture - Reclaimed Telephone Pole (cedar)
Description
As well as working in glass Rick has created hundreds of wood sculptures over the past 30 years. This sculpture was created after having a discussion with a friend who is a native carver. Rick asked him why we he kept re-creating his ancestors work rather that reflect contemporary native conditions. Rick carved this totem to show what he would do to reflect his contemporary society. Hence, the televisions on the front of the sculpture. The reverse side of the totem has robotic faces carved into it. The sculpture is red cedar carved from a reclaimed telephone pole. The 6' width size is due to the wings which could be removed for shipping.
By the way...his friend thought it was great !
