Since childhood, I've made detailed drawings of the wild plants, animals and insects who share the rough, sage-covered Wyoming foothills where I grew up.
Among granite boulders and broken cliffs where ancient, wind-twisted cedars dance; along high ridges where herds of pronghorns, mule deer and elk can see for a hundred miles; deep in cottonwood draws where the creek rushes and pools; cradled in the soft sand of coppice dunes. In all these places my eyes have taken in the graceful lines and dynamic rhythms of even the smallest life forms. Twenty-two species reveal themselves in this wildlife sculpture in bronze, from the large, musky blooms and curled, velvety leaves of balsamroot, to the delicate patterns of butterfly wings, to the succulent fruits of wild raspberries ripe for the bears. A tiny toad nestles in sandy soil where pale, clustered broomrape grows. A zephyr a...
I have been an artist since I was knee high to a short-horned locust. My dad, Willoughby Senior (FAA) was a professional artist and writer and I have stepped in his shoes since I was born, though he drew horses better than I did when I was a kid. My family lived in a hand-hewn log cabin we built ourselves in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains and had no water or electricity. I love my life with my husband and family in Wyoming among the horses, gophers, deer, antelope, coyotes, red-tailed hawks, and the wild landscape. My work is driven by the land, animals, wild plants and birds I have come to know so well. Hummingbirds still try to get nectar from my upturned fingers. My artwork consists of all these things and more...

Dawn, this is first time I saw your bronzes. Wow. This particular piece is astonishingly beautiful, with its ornate detail, 3D, and different colors. Bravo!

Thanks, everyone, for your kind comments. Charlie, I've been using Caleco Foundry in Cody for many years. They cast everything from giant monuments to my tiny detail work and everything in between. I use a specialty foundry in Lovelend, CO for large flat pieces, but otherwise everything's from Cody.

Thanks, all! Marsha -- to answer your question -- detail work comes naturally to me, but it helps to have detailed drawings I've made for models, just the right clay (polymer), very small tools, and lots of patience! Thank you all so much for your kind comments!
