Artist's Description

A very old cabin along the back roads of the southern Appalachian Mountains shown here in autumn, the forest taking back what was once a thriving family's homestead... This image was captured in Tennessee very close to the North Carolina border where Appalachian history is rich and families have lived on the same family farms for generations. The log cabin has been a symbol of humble origins in US politics since the early 19th century. Seven United States Presidents were born in log cabins, including Abraham Lincoln, Andrew Jackson, and James Buchanan. Although William Henry Harrison was not one of them, he and the Whigs during the 1840 presidential election were the first to use a log cabin as a symbol to show North Americans that he was a man of the people. Other candidates followed Harrison's example, making the idea of a log cabin—and, more generally, a non-wealthy background—a recurring theme in campaign biographies

About Debra and Dave Vanderlaan

Debra and Dave Vanderlaan

"After 30 years in the floral and plant nursery business, Debra and Dave Vanderlaan sold both businesses and turned their life-long photography hobby into full-time obsession. Many of their images showcase the tropical landscapes of South Florida and the mountain vistas of the Smoky Mountains and many gorgeous scenes around the world. Their motto is Celebrate Life and that seemed a natural name for their gallery. Their images have been displayed in the Smithsonian Museum in Washington, DC, at the North Carolina Museum of Art, Turchin Art Center in Boone NC, the Palm Beach Photography Museum, and of course at The MAC: Murphy Art...
