Artist's Description

Woman with ichthyosis. Poster advertising circus exhibit Susi 'the Elephant Skin Girl'. It is thought that Susi was born as Charlotte in 1909 in Berlin. She had a severe form of the skin condition ichthyosis, where her skin thickened and cracked and turned grey, hence the stage name. Her condition improved as her parents peeled the skin from her face every night, a procedure that need to be repeated daily. Susi was exhibited in the USA from 1927, settling in New York where she died in 1975. This artwork, dating from 1929, was part of the human circus exhibits collections held at the Eugenics Record Office, Cold Spring Harbor, New York, USA.
