Artist's Description
Common Yellow Wood Sorrel, Oxalis stricta, called the common yellow woodsorrel, common yellow oxalis, upright yellow-sorrel, lemon clover, or more ambiguously and informally sourgrass or pickle plant, is an herbaceous plant, a medium sized edible plant that occurs throughout most of North America. Oxalis means literally sour and is named as such due to its oxalic acid content. Wood sorrel is rich in Vitamin C. Historically, it was used to treat scurvy, fevers, urinary infections, mouth sores, nausea and sore throats. The plant, which is widely considered to be the plant that St. Patrick used to demonstrate the Trinity to the ancient Irish, is distinguished by its clover-like leaves, arranged alternately along the stem, divided into 3 heart-shaped leaflets.
