The Wood Duck (Aix sponsa) is a medium-sized duck with a small bill, long tail, and a crest, and measures about 18.5 inches in length and 1.3 pounds in weight. The male is particularly colorful with iridescent plumage, a crested head, and has red eyes and orange legs. The female is much less colorful, and has a prominent white eye ring and a white throat. Their preferred habitat includes swamps, ponds, marshes, lakes and creeks, with overhanging, close-by trees. Their geographic distribution is fairly widespread in the United States, as well as in some Northern areas of Mexico. They nest in cavities in trees, high off the ground. Their preferred diet includes berries, seeds, acorns and insects, making them omnivores.
