ZUNDAPP K800
2011, graphite on paper, 11.5 X 15
Hunting Art Prize 2012 finalist
One of the motorcycles from the Club Balestrero VMC (Veteran Motor Car Association) of Lucca, Italy is a wonderfully restored Zundapp K800. The K800 has such a wonderful 1930's Art Deco appearance that I had to make my artist's rendition of what I was seeing. The detailed reflections of the piazza and people in the mirror, chrome and paint were so irresistible. I loved drawing the juxtaposition of the textures: the paving cobbles, chrome & painted surfaces, mirror reflections and hand grip rubber. www.normanbean.carbonmade.com
It always amazes me .... everything our eyes see is reflected light (photons bouncing toward our face). By way of a biological electro-chemical miracle this sensitive visual system transfers information to the brain, the home of the 'Phantom Captain,' where depth, detail, contrast, texture, color, shadow, light, perspective, point of view and everything you can discern, all come together as Reality. In creating a work of art the Artist seeks to trick other Phantom Captains into believing that a flat piece of paper has depth and dimensions. That there, on a flat sheet of drawing paper, down in the image, is a reality. A beautiful, shiny and interesting reality. An Artist has many ways with which to coax the graphite...

Thank you Janet. The Zundapp drawing has sold lots of prints, but I still have the original hanging in my studio. I take it that you are a cat lover? I like the Down The Road painting...viewed at a distance my mind fills in little details that you implied.

I love your work, I love a good drawing!

Thank you Sir. I think I will create another drawing of this classic moto. I would like to show off the 'art deco-ness' of the design of the K800, in a wider angle view angling up at the moto from about 30 cm off the pavement. (really highlighting the exhaust pipes, fuel tank and frame lines.)

While I did not win the Hunting Art Prize 2012, I did meet many interested art collectors, gallery owners and lots of fellow artists. Out of over 3600 qualified entries My Zundapp was one of the 109 finalists. There are many more drawings coming off of my desk, and there are many interesting contests to enter, and I can dream!
