Adam draws inspiration from the work of other artists and photographers. Still getting out and into nature is his ultimate motivation be it a moment of perfect light, the euphonious sounds of nature, deafening quiet or the company that he is with. He has a remarkable ability to capture scenes that draw you into the image. Adam’s extensive body of work demonstrates his love and respect for the natural world around us. Nature is fragile and his hope that his images will prompt us to embrace and protect that fragility in some small way.
“Light is the key to producing an image that can relay a sense, a feeling.”
Photographer Adam Gibbs has a passion for nature and natural landscapes. He has the amazing ability to translate that passion into mesmerising images that allow us to see life as he does. Adam studied photography at Langara College and was influenced by the iconic landscape photographers. His work has won numerous awards and has been part of exhibits and private collections around the world. Although Adam primarily uses digital technology now, he has spent most of his career working with 4x5 large format camera equipment and attributes the success of his images to his extensive use of what is now considered old school equipment. “Using these manual cameras slows down the whole process of taking an image. It provides more time to think about the picture and the composition.” “With a large format camera the image is composed under the hood, and you see shapes rather than the actual subject matter, this forces you to create the composition with those shapes.”
Despite being drawn to grand landscapes, Adam has a particular connection with forests and mountains. He loves creating images of more intimate scenes and vignettes of the larger scene. “I enjoy complex and busy scenes that challenge me to observe and make some order out of the chaos.”
His images portray a softness and sense of comfort yet there is an immense respect of light and beautiful details. Adam effectively captures those fleeting moments into his pictures.
