I regard myself as part of the English landscape tradition but with a questioning edge. After I gave up teaching in 1995 I was able to concentrate more fully on my painting and long distance walking; in 1997 my wife and I backpacked 1200 miles from Land's End to John o'Groats. Our joint love of the countryside (Sheila writes walking books) led us to move to the Yorkshire Dales National Park in 1999.
