BIOGRAPHY: Leo Mazzeo is a noted painter, photographer, and Berkshire County, MA native. His oil paintings have been recently featured at the Berkshire Artist Museum, the Berkshire Community College Intermodal Gallery, the Lichtenstein Center for the Arts, and the Whitney Center for the Arts; he studied business in addition to art in college, so he has also worked as a Curator and Gallery Manager. A devoted advocate for local art and artists, Mazzeo has served on the board of the Berkshire Art Association, filled the position of Publicity Chair and served as Vice President for the Housatonic Valley Art League, and is currently the New Ashford Representative to the Cultural Council of Northern Berkshire. He is the founder of arts indie and the co-founder of the monthly First Fridays Artswalk in Pittsfield, MA. Mazzeo is also a professional website and graphics designer and, as such, serves as the webmaster for regional artists of note, and various businesses. ARTIST STATEMENT: Though I often work with other media, I am primarily an oil painter. I use bold, heavily-pigmented color with gestural brushwork, and sometimes knife-work, on surfaces often textured and under-painted. I use only a very small selection of colors, preferring to find my way to the colors I seek through mixing on my pallet, as well as on the surface, since I also prefer to generally work wet on wet. I often work quickly to help convey an initial feeling of directness and immediacy, both in subject matter and presence. For me, a sense of the moment is vital and I wish the viewer to harvest feelings of empathy and longing, positive or negative, for a similar situation or experience.
