Rufus Norman was born in St. Thomas, U. S. Virgin Islands rooted in the culture, music and brilliant colors of his birthplace. Recognizing his artistic talent as a child, his parents enrolled him in art classes at Pratt Institute shortly after they moved the New York. Throughout his elementary school years, Rufus was asked to create murals for the school’s walls. While a student at New York City’s High School of Music and Art (now named Fiorello H LaGuardia High School of Music and Art and the Performing Arts) he was introduced to the work of the art masters. His work was frequently compared to the work of Ingres. However, he was attracted to the work of the popular artists at that time, especially Pollack, DeKooning, Kandinsky and Picasso. Through the dramatic use of acrylics, oils and watercolors Rufus Norman creates colorful expressions of the incredibly diverse people he has encountered through his life experiences.
After high school graduation Rufus left fine art to pursue and achieve success in a technical business career. Only after his children were grown and independent, and after accepting the fact that he is and always will be a painter, Rufus Norman resumed painting.
In 2005, Rufus was selected as one of the winners of a competition at Amsterdam Whitney Gallery in NYC. In 2010, Rufus was selected to be an Artist in Residence at Montpelier Art Center in Laurel, Maryland.
Rufus Norman is an internationally renowned artist whose work is included in private collections in California, District of Columbia, Florida, Maryland, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and the Caribbean. From his studio in Annapolis, MD, Rufus continues to paint expressively and abstractly in all paint mediums while expanding the choice of venues in which to exhibit his work.

Rufus Norman joined Fine Art America on August 24th, 2012.
