Hi, and welcome!
My name is Susan Avishai and I am a fine artist from Toronto, Canada. I have worked in many media--egg tempera, collage, printmaking, silverpoint drawing, but for the last 10 years I've been making sculptural pieces from cast-off clothing. Textile waste is one of our most pressing problems, as landfill gradually takes over scarcer space, uses up resources, and adds toxicity to our natural environment. We must do better. However, from this problem can come amazingly creative solutions, including artistic expression, as my diverted stream of shirts (infinitesimal as it is) tries to prove.
The pieces are often large, and time consuming to make. They are exhibited mainly in international fibre shows. But the patterns created by the manipulation of the fabric have a second (or third, really) life as designs for other uses... abstracted wall art, home accessories, clothing. I invite you to see the possibilities for unusual and original designs on products available on this website. You'll be amazed at how such a small investment can provide zing to your home!
