Born and raised in South Lake Tahoe, CA, Craig Newman became an artist in his living room while following along to Bob Ross using crayons. While in high school, he was able to start taking art classes at Lake Tahoe Community College with his now mentor of twenty one years, esteemed artist Phyllis Shafer. Craig’s inspiration for his fantasy landscapes comes from Phyllis’s teachings, and Phyllis even created a class specifically for Craig because ‘he just couldn’t follow the rules’ when he was fifteen years old, entitled Figurative and Narrative Painting. In this class, he was able to really dive into his creative psyche and come up with a series of innovative oil paintings.
Within the almost 20 years that Craig has been creating his artwork, Craig has sold many of his paintings by commission and by print. Craig’s favorite style of paintings include surreal landscapes based in Tahoe and the surrounding areas, mandalas, portraits, and murals. His murals and artwork can be seen all over Nevada and the Tahoe Basin in businesses and homes alike.
Craig went to the Art Institute of California, Orange County and later to Lake Tahoe Community College pursuing degrees in Fine Art. Craig is a lifelong learner and continues to take courses with his mentor, Phyllis Shafer whenever he can.
Craig lives in South Lake Tahoe, CA with his wife, Claire Nightingale, his art manager and yoga instructor and their Border Collie, Piper. He currently is working as a full-time artist and teaching art classes at Tahoe Valley Elementary School and offers online instruction as well.
Craig Newman joined Fine Art America on May 11th, 2020.
