Of Water and Sky

My paintings are contemplations, contemplations on the textures, colors, forms and sensory experiences of the world around me and on the insights that they inspire. Most interesting to me, and perhaps the reason that people have described my work as “surrealistic” or “ethereal”, is the sense of shifting thresholds elicited by clouds obscuring mountains, by light affecting form and by objects losing themselves in sun and shadow. It is a sense of edges blending between image and reflection, between an entity and its surroundings, between the present and the past. Watercolor is the perfect medium to explore this morphing of form. Thanks to the soft edges that the paint creates in wet paper, colors intermingle and shapes merge and reappear. The artistic term for this is “lost and found edges”, a perfect metaphor for these thresholds of present and past, human and nature, experience and memory, the ineffable within the mundane.
