1971 was a turning point in my career as an international magazine photographer. In the spring I spent almost 3 months travelling with the Bakhtiari people in the Zagros mountains of Iran on their annual migration (trans-humance). A journey over six mountain ranges, 6,000ft to 15,000ft, then said to involve 500,000 people and 5 million sheep, goats, cows, mules and other animals.
