Antoaneta Melnikova-Hillman is a self taught artist. She considers herself to be half Bulgarian, half Russian and 36 percent American. Her grandparents lost everything in the 1917 Russian Revolution, and being members of the White Russians were forced to emigrate to Turkey to survive the communist takeover. They later moved to Bulgaria.
