Avril Moore was born and brought up in Fermanagh, Northern Ireland, a county of lakes and forests. Her first breakthrough in art came in 1978 at the age of 17, when she entered a national competition with a painting of her pet Pomeranian dog. This was selected out of 42,000 entries to be displayed in the National Gallery in London.
