I have been painting for approximately ten years. I recently retired from teaching high school English after thirty years at the same high school I attended. My art began as a diversion to lesson plans, grading papers, and other school related issues. I began with a workshop with Maxine Masterfield for experimental watercolor. I then took classes from Heather Fortner in gyotaku (fish printing) and other plant printing on an etching press. I am mostly self-taught through books of various watercolorists, collage artists, printers and my latest project is focused on colored pencil. I love photography and have been fortunate to have been selected into the Selby Gardens photographic exhibition the past five years. Mostly, my photographs are used as references for my art. I belong to Island West Gallery, Anna Maria Island, Florida which features absolutely outstanding artists.
All of my photography is shot with a Nikon D5000 camera. I am, by no means, a professional photographer as most of my pictures are used for painting. In fact, last year while trying to photograph a white pelican swimming , I leaned a little too far, fell off the dock and knocked myself out on a boat. Fortunately, as I was face down in the water, a man jumped in and 'saved' me from drowning. (Cameras went right in with me...) I was in ICU for five days. It's taken me close to a year to return to what I'd call 'normal.' . I do not use Photoshop unless I want to change from one format to another.
Recently, (the past six months), I've taken up fishing. I've lived in Florida most of my life, parents also from here, etc., and never fished! So, my grandboys and I started camping in tents, of course, and fishing last September. Now I print what I catch!
