Wood or Linoleum Block Prints and Etchings
My Lakota Moons woodcut series is greatly influenced by Native American art and stories. I lived among the Navajo and Hopi tribes on the Arizona deserts for five years as a teenager, and have also spent time on the Rosebud, Pine Ridge, Yankton and other reservations with the Lakota, and along the Wind River with the Arapaho. Native American legends and American Indian myth are a great inspiration for my artwork, especially my woodcuts. This series, still a work in progress, illustrates the months of the Lakota lunar calendar, combining my own experiences with wild animals, plants, birds and the seasons, with stories I learned from my Navajo, Hopi, Lakota and Arapaho friends. My other woodcuts, scratchboards and drawings reflect the wide range of my experiences growing up in a log cabin in the foothills of Wyoming's Snowy Range. My husband Juel and I hike and ride horseback through the rugged, rocky landscape, and encounter and interact with many kinds of wild animals, birds, insects, plants, weather -- sometimes sketching a scene on the spot, or recalling an incident or adventure after I get back to the cabin.
