The Cornish Man Engine

A man engine is a mechanism of reciprocating ladders and stationary platforms installed in mines to assist the miners' journeys to and from the working levels. It was invented in Germany in the 19th century and was a prominent feature of tin and copper mines in Cornwall until the beginning of the twentieth century. The Cornish Man Engine is a mechanical puppet, part miner, part machine which was built to celebrate and commemorate the rich mining heritage or Cornwall and West Devon. When fully standing he reaches over 10 metres tall and is the largest puppet ever built in Britain. First unveiled in 2016 The Cornish Man Engine toured the south-west visiting sites of mining heritage. These pictures were taken in Tavistock on his 2018 resurrection tour when he traveled the length of Britain and celebrating the countries rich mining and engineering heritage
