Jim Thorpe PA
Jim Thorpe PA. Formerly the towns of Mauch Chunk and East Mauch Chunk, it takes the name from a native American Indian term meaning mountain of the sleeping bear. Mauch Chunk was one of the richest towns in America in the late 1800s, but became a depressed coal region area in the 1950s. In 1957, the citizens brought the body of Jim Thorpe here at the request of his wife, and the towns were named after him. Now, as in the early 1900s, the efforts of the townspeople have made the town a tourist attraction that welcomes thousands of guests every year.
