Jim Mauchly was given his first camera, a $4.99 Ansco roll film camera, at the age of six. By high school, he was working weekends as a part-time photographer’s assistant, helping to shoot weddings in his hometown of Norristown, Pa. After graduation, Mauchly enlisted in the United States Navy, where he studied photography at the US Naval School of Photography, in Florida and received training in photojournalism, aerial photography, and portraiture. He served as a photographer’s mate until the end of his military service.

Mauchly has worked full-time as a photographer since 1990. During the 1990s, he worked as a freelance photographer working with various studios and commercial clients in southern New Hampshire and Colorado. He also worked in digital photo restoration, digital imagery, and design as well as designing web sites.

In 2000, he opened Mountain Graphics Photography, a professional studio, photo gallery and custom frame shop in Fairlee, Vermont. His areas of expertise include commercial photography (including aerials, site and architectural images, and products), portraits (on location or in the studio), and events (from weddings to corporate conferences). Mauchly’s ability to put people at ease—combined with 35 years of experience in photojournalism—helps him to produce powerful images that tell a story and capture the mood of his subjects, the setting, and the day.

Mauchly also focuses on fine-art images of the natural world, from wildlife to scenics. He has a keen eye for light, preferring to work in the evenings or early in the morning, when the interplay between light, subject and shadow is most interesting.

Mauchly is passionate about his work, whether he is shooting outdoors, at a wedding, or in his studio. “I love to explore the way light illuminates a scene or a single object such as a person or even a tree, to examine the possibilities from every angle, he says. I strive to make the beauty of God’s earth even more apparent to the casual observer.

Mauchly is a member of the Professional Photographers of America, has served on the advisory committee for the Digital Communications and Multimedia Design curriculum at River Bend Career and Technical Center in Bradford, Vermont. He has taught photography classes at River Bend, and at New Hampshire Community Technical College.

Jim Mauchly joined Fine Art America on May 20th, 2010.
