I am an Artist, art teacher and retired social worker, who has lived in San Jose, Ca. for the past 27 years. My interest, as I attempt to reflect in my work, is around relationships. People as we relate to one another in family and our environment. I create art in the form of paintings, printmaking and drawings. My most recent series of paintings are self exploratory as I relate to the most recent change in my life from full time social worker to full time artist. I believe art to be a creative expression of one’s soul that can assist in human transformation and healing, therefore I believe teaching to be a natural progression of “doing “art.
I received my BA from Indiana University North West, Gary Indiana in 1982 with a major in Fine Arts, particularly, drawing and printmaking. In 1984, I relocated, with my two children, to San Jose after being accepted into the MFA program at San Jose State University; however after completing my MA show, I had to leave the program due to family hardship, i.e. single parenthood. I returned to San Jose State in 1992 to complete the Masters of Social Work program and received the MSW in 1995. I worked as a social worker with a specialty in child abuse/substance abuse for the County of Santa Clara for 20 years and retired in 2008. Prior to retirement I decided that I would return to art and began displaying art throughout the bay area.
I am currently part of a group show, War and Healing, at the Euphrat Museum, DeAnza College, Cupertino Ca. The exhibit runs from February 4th through March 21, 2013. I will also have work on display at San Jose City Hall on February 15th, during the African American Flag Raising Ceremony, from 5pm -7pm I was a part of an installation at the San Jose City Hall, Hidden Heritages, depicting six African American Families that settled in San Jose, Ca during the early 1900s. in 2010.
