My artwork begins with a reference photograph taken by me, unless otherwise noted in the description. I then draw the image and use a technique of shading, blending and layering with mixed media to create the final piece. I enjoy the process of taking my work from the beginning composition and photograph to the final finished artwork.
I have been drawing since childhood and worked primarily in graphite and charcoal. I always wanted to paint and create in color. I tried oil painting, acrylic and watercolor, but never found a medium that was a 'fit' for me. Then I learned about the amazing artwork that was being created using colored pencils. After completing my first piece, I was immediately hooked. While I continue to use graphite and charcoal, I now also include oil and wax based colored pencils, water color pencils, pastels, artist markers and ink. I love the layering and blending which is very similar to techniques used in painting and yet the pencils give me the control that I enjoyed with graphite and charcoal. I feel I have finally found the combination that allows me to enjoy a wonderful blend of my love for drawing and the desire to create in color.
