The People of Makoko in Lagos. The resilient community 2003

Makoko is an old settlement of many years . It is claimed it has been in existence for over 100 years, arguably. An urban slum at the fringes of Lagos- an emerging global megacity. Many interests Makoko has generated amongst environmental bodies including the United Nations habitat department. These pictures were made over a period of 2 weeks in 2003. Some were exhibited at the 50th Venice Biennale in Italy and the 5th Gwangu Biennale in South Korea. The Lagos state government is about relocating this community from its present location: when?
