When I was growing up in San Diego in the late 50's and early 60's our family enjoyed many camping trips to the Eastern High Sierra Mountains to a site in the foothills just west of Lone Pine, California, which is now called the Mt. Whitney Portal. It was there that my appreciation for the beauty of mountains and an emotional bond with the surrounding landscape began.
