Born in Cape Town, Solly Gutman is largely self-taught, with the exception of a Commercial Art Course through the London College of Art. He has been working in Scraperboard ('Scratchboard' in the USA) since 1968, and this has remained his exclusive medium. He has held solo and joint exhibitions in Kirstenbosch and other areas in the Cape and Gauteng, as well as overseas.
