My books and photos are the products of my curiosity and my search for insights into our world, or at least my world. We live in a fascinating place and time; and whether that is for a reason, or just by chance, such a life is amazingly rich with experiences and connections. The best way to feel the sense the world is to be active enough to get out into it, and quiet enough to observe it.

Those who are familiar with my books will recognize the continuation of a theme. For twelve months I visit, write about, and photograph a part of our world throughout the year.

I think the best way to know a place is to visit it often, on its good days, its bad days, and those seemingly boring days in between the dramas. As with human relations, a single encounter can't reveal the depths only found within a long-term relationship.

For many people, nature is something abstract and somewhere else, despite its central role in our debates. I try to provide a personal view and review of what our places are like with and without us.

My work has focused on Washington State's Cascade Mountains, from the wet west, across the high crest, and into the dry east; and along Whidbey Island from its drenched northern and southern tips as well as its more arid middle.

I treat digital photography as if it was film. I don't crop, colorize, add or subtract (though the folks at Fine Balance Imaging, meticulously clean and improve the final product).
