Crossbills are colorful birds named after the crossed tips on their beaks. A popular sight on our crossbill posters, the males often have bright red or orange feathers. Females sometimes have lime feathers that make them look like small parrots. Red crossbills love conifer forests and are seldom found away from their favorite evergreen tree groves. Whole populations will sometimes move around when food supplies become plentiful in nearby thickets.
