Title: Etna - Cuntisa
Description: Etna at sunset seen from Randazzo several years ago. Panchromatic film, red Kodak Wratten filter and Hasselblad camera. Scanner and slight manipulation.
The lenticular cloud that, from a mispronunciation of the Sicilian dialect, "Cuntisa"(Contesa) becomes "Contessa".
A real spectacle that is born from the encounter and contention of two air currents (hot and cold). It is an effect of the orographic waves that form at the top of the volcano.
The most spectacular events occur in Autumn/Winter in conjunction with an eruption or small eruptive activities.
For some people they would be the prelude to the sudden change in weather conditions.
