We often have threads in which we express our opinions on various artist and we bash each other as to why we like or dislike the artist work. Without naming any artist and just talking generally, what would cause you to dislike an artist's work? I know there could be a lot of reasons but try to limit them to a few at a time, thanks!

What Rose said and also, selling famous dead artists. One person has 30 MILLION visitors from the collection of DaVinci, etc... That's just me. Not jealously, because I could that too, but won't. I can't really pinpoint what I don't like artistically from other people as it is their own vision. Probably disgusting and disturbing images or hate, etc... would to me be examples of what I don't like.

I don't like ceaseless crowing attached to poor skills and zero artistic vision. Or people who snag PD images, change a background and want to be recognized as artists.

Ron,
I want to go on record as saying, I do not discriminate. I love all sorts of art. Hope I am not trolling your thread.

I can appreciate almost everything on some level, but extremes don't resonate with me. I don't care for boring or vapid, and I don't care for heavy handed or overworked.

Pictures of cats. Paintings on velvet. Pictures of lighthouses. Paintings of farms. Portraits of famous people. Steel sculptures that are just welded together in random order. Photographs of seashells. Any photograph that depicts someone else's work..like a park sculpture. Paintings people call abstract when they are clearly just random crap. Minimalist sculptures that are a substitute for being lazy.

The difference, Zin, is stating what you dislike, subjectively, as opposed to stating what's good or bad, objectively. The first post in this thread asks for the former, and so far, that's what the replies have been.
No cans, no worms. ;)

Point taken Cynthia. Thank you :)
I think then that my first post sums it up what I don't like.

Opinions of who is an artist and who is not etc are vapid.
Ron,
When it comes to photography, I do not like snapshots.
When it comes to painting, I do not like halos.
When it comes to digital art, I do not like aliens.
When it comes to cats, just back off everyone.

I have total recall and nightmares. It is as if bad art is coming to get me in the night, so I must populate the world with my good art.

Offensive art for attention sake. Art that isn't. Work, I fail to call it art, when someone takes an artists work and screws with it and calls it art. (I detest, for instance, the numerous pieces of work which mock Leonardo's "Mona Lisa" - and you can take it from there). I detest almost anything with human babies stuck in seashells, bird nests - and so as not to shame and name - I'll leave that there - other than natural photo's or paintings, I suppose. I have to laugh when I see angels depicted with wings or female angels - decorative - I don't suppose that is really disliking them - as it's really creative.

It is funny. When people talk about "offensive" art, the first thing I think of is Manet's "Olympia" which is considered a classic today. At the time, the name Olympia was a common one for a prostitute. The obvious flagrant nude was very offensive in its day. Now, it is a celebrated piece.

David B. Glad you listed a few things to break up your art love fest! I was going to remind you that you don't care for the surrealist that starts with the letter M!

As to what I don't like artistically, it is kind of like asking what I don't like musically. My musical tastes are vast. There was a time, though, that I said I hated anything country or hip hop. Since that time, however, I have found myself owning a couple of Lyle Lovett records and a Gorillaz record. I guess in the end, I can't make a recipe for what I don't like, but I know it when I see it.

Paintings that look like they used mud to paint with because it has been 'licked' so much. I also detest gore!

Ron,
I hate to see the LO/VE paintings and photos. Philadelphia must be so sick of it. Nothing could be shallower.

I'm checking out all the art you guys don't like and there is some awesome art.
That said, the type of art that turns me off is beautiful work in a cheap ugly stupid looking frame. That grates on my nerves.

I'm adding to your statement
I hate to see the LO/VE paintings and photos.that don't give credit to Robert Indiana

Roger,
Is that LO/VE sculpture in the PD?
It makes a difference to me. If it is in the PD people have the option of attribution. If it is not in the PD what are people doing with his property?

Glenn, clearly not to everyone's taste (and my smile was more awkward than anything). I can't even explain why I'm drawn to skulls and darker art. But the attraction is there, so I kind of just go with it. I tried to focus on landscape with the goal of a wider appeal, but found it a bit soul-destroying because my heart wasn't really in it.
For better or worse it is what it is (to invoke a few platitudes that actually sum it up as well as anything else).

I know I'm in the minority, since so many do it.
I've had it with flashy artists web sites, with black backgrounds...and with all the bells and whistles possible.
If an image is meant to be static..I prefer it to remain static when looking at it on my computer.....I want to determine how long to stay or when to leave an image and not let a timed slide show determine.
And who has black walls in their homes?

I don't like that I don't have the time to upload all of the tens of thousands of PD image that I have bought and paid for so I can tick off even more judgemental, holier than thou, pompous, art snobs that can't compete.
I also don't like that Abbie and FAA would allow a thread like this that is allowing several thousands of their members, many of them huge sellers, to come under attack from those same judgemental, holier than thou, pompous, art snobs. Many of them are not selling much at all if anything at all.

I dont like derivative art that looks like mix and match clip art, that I flick past as I have seen it a thousand times before. Nor most cat art, until I see something original that makes me pause and look, its no longer just another cat but a new take.

Floyd, you make a good point. I'm fine with PD. The only thing I said was I don't like (but it's their right) selling famous dead artists work here. This is a living artist site I thought, but to each their own. As for PD, nothing wrong with adding to an existing image. How many stock backdrops do plays, TV & film use? Many PD ones.
If I said anything to the contrary elsewhere... Abbie would know I stay up sometimes past my bedtime with NyQuil. :)

Roger, I do!! Haha
My floor is black, my one wall is charcoal, brick on another, rock on the other and the ceiling...I'm thinking black with some chalk writing on it or soft black grey mix. I'm hand painting it all for my next show. Black is back, but I would NEVER suggest it for anyone...unless I'm doing the work. I've been hand painting walls for many years.
Thank you for your post!

"This is a living artist site I thought"
It is a site for any artist that Sean says it is for. And he has gone out of his way to solicit a lot of the big galleries that sell nothing but other people's art, a lot of them dead artists and a lot of them public domain.
Sean explained that very well in his own words not that long ago. It is his goal to have every image on the internet or as many as he possibly can get, sold through FAA/Pixels.

It's a great point, Floyd, I think we were all having a pleasant snide gossip party where we don't say names but we say, "I really hate that person's artwork" and you are like the parent that broke up the party. It was fun while it lasted.
We should be building each other up.
Meanwhile, check out the gross art because it is fabulous on this site, don't hesitate to look up barf art. hahaha.
Barf art? I'll pass.
Sorry Floyd, I missed that statement. When I searched Google for FAA this pulled up:
Fine Art America - Posters, Art Prints, Canvas Prints, Wall Art, iPhone ...
https://fineartamerica.com/
Fine Art America is home to 100,000+ of the world's greatest living artists and photographers. Browse through our collection of 10,000,000+ images - all of which ...
My misunderstanding as this is a snippet and that's what I get for reading snippets instead of reading the full thing lol :)

Thank you, Lisa....love me some black walls! I always start with black ink on canvas...it makes sense that they will look best against black.

Last I saw FAA is touting being the home of 500.000 artists and 5 million images.
I think it may have started out as just living artists but it, like everything else on the Internet, has evolved into what it is today.
There are a lot of old timers that just hate that and I get that. I respect their position. But it is what it is. I always find it much easier to deal with things as I find them instead of what they once were or what I wish they were.
I mean let's face it, there are people in here that would love to chase all of the stock and public domain sellers out of here. But it does not stop there. There are also some that would just as soon chase all the photographers out of here too! lol

Not me, I love all art, even children's art. Pictures, images and paintings all tell a story, and I love that.

The more art the merrier Floyd. I like a diverse site, it attracts people.
Not opening any discussion about this, but Alexa is showing FAA moving way down in traffic and a main competitor rising fast. Worries me.
Everyone has taste, what you like and what you dislike. What I have discovered over the years is that these taste are fluid rather that stagnant. They change based on many factors, education, exposer, life experiences and so on. Many of the artist I really love today I might have disliked ten twenty , thirty or more years ago. Society is the same, an example being the intense dislike of Impressionism to being an extremely popular style. I don't see examing ones current taste as being a negative activity as some seem to think.

I want to point out one other thing about PD and Dead artist and then I will drop the issue.
I may be wrong but I think Sean is selling both through his Hand Painted Masterpiece program.
Floyd, I just went back through the thread looking for the snob type artist degrading everyone and failed to find them. My feeling about that is you are over reacting. Taste not only evolve through time and experience but also vary by ones mood. That is kind of like do you listen to the same music all the time?

Robert,
FAA took a hit with Alexa over the SSL cert or https. FAA will come back strong. I think it will anyway.
