Met Our Featured Artist For April 2018: Kathy Braud

Art has been a lifelong journey of creativity, from using a sewing machine to expanding my wardrobe, to remodeling our century old home while raising our children and practicing nursing and, finally, watercolor painting, an activity to counteract my empty nest syndrome.

When I realized this medium could capture the essence of a mood or memory or describe a pleasure, I fell in love with watercolor!

Over the years I have enjoyed my ventures into all kinds of subject matter, locations and opportunities to paint and exhibit. I have experienced wonderful people at art fairs and events in our 4 state area. I think there is power in the art we fashion, and this energy can be shared with others. I do like to create drama and boldness in my paintings by playing with light and shadows and shades of color in between. I can get lost for hours in the creative process enjoying the serendipity of mixing paint on paper, rapid spreading of color, use of layering and texture. With a little help from a photo, I can remember why I liked a certain scene, be it peaceful or active, and in memory I am able to be there. Always wanting to learn more about watercolor, I love to take workshops to get a new perspective about the process.

Hi, This is Kathy! What a nice write up you did for me, Michelle. Now - To bring you up to date on my latest art activities......

I continue to showcase my framed art in exhibitions in my central part of the State of Minnesota. The last 2 exhibits were for 2 months each and the facility heard good comments from visitors - always a pleasant reward. I would very much like to have a collector purchase and enjoy my works in their own home. With FAA, I have provided a way for wonderful prints to be obtained, if you did not want the original art. While I have a substantial collection of originals, I also have had some wonderful images that have sold! I occasionally do commissions....

Currently my 2D art is on display in Northern Minnesota in a Still Life exhibit and the gallery was so pleased to also have my works complimenting the 3D and other 2D works. See my blog info on my FAA site.

Monday, I am giving a watercolor demonstration to a watercolor organization. The greyscale images at the beginning of my gallery will be some of the many, being displayed and shown - as a "how to go about" this visual project. The group is excited, as it is easy to let the sky be calm and quiet...... but so much more fun to not be afraid to layer and add activity in the sky. The current group is grey but in the latest, I am trying to paint in layers of burnt sienna. It brings a warm color to the drawing.

So I hope you visit not only this Collectors Gallery, but many more here at FAA. My own FAA artist gallery is also available to be enjoyed.
kathy-braud.pixels.com --- this website includes the ability to have art on coffee cups, notebooks, fabric, and much more. Great gift ideas!

My demo was successful! Did 2 paintings + more info.
I had fun sharing the greyscale process and did manage to move paint in a planned method till done. Of course serendipity also intervened ... and the extra brush swishing also helped the scene.
I had big cardboards up of many greyscale paintings from a variety of light and dark backgrounds - up in the room for the eye to see the process done in another manner.
A video rendition allowing my works to be shown on a TV screen ( with my head out of the way) .was made - but as far as I know, it had no U Tube qualities. So you are safe !

I successfully described this eye-catching feline against her background. I used a very limited color palette and sourcing photography to reference her stance and actions without disturbing her with my presence. With good composition, warm glowing grays, white spaces and negative painting, this painting evolved quickly with a minimum of strokes into this lovely image. This FAA image has over 9000 views.

Calla Lilies are displayed in a modern square vase, visually transparent so even the stems are open to view, with a curve of blossoms facing in all directions and colorful green-blue shadows reflect across the bottom. A very white-on-white still life.

Featured in the Collectors Gallery 3/21/2018 This a fun and different painting to do.
I could be commissioned to design another similar still life painting and maybe you would like a different color flower? I was surprised at the number of dark colored blooms in the calla family!

As Four Clucks (hens) are visiting this Minnesota watering dish, they appear to be saying - You are new here. Do you want a drink of water? Come join us at the watering dish.
My watercolor painting depicts a colorful selection of fowl or poultry, enjoying their warm chicken coop home with sunbeams streaming in. There is a wonderful wide variety of values in this painting which showcases the chickens up close. Your attention might wander through the image, but the hens in front do retain your interest as they look back at you with their wide open eyes.

Acclaim and Awards:
10/15/2017 Four Clucks, was chosen as 2nd Place in the NorthStar Watermedia Juried National Exhibition, Blaine, MN. And a money award -
Four Clucks was accepted into the Red River Watercolor Society 23rd Annual National Watermedia Exhibition 5/17-9/4/16
Four Clucks has been accepted into the Minnesota Sate Fair Juried Fine Art Exhibition 2015. It is a great honor and I learned this painting had received the Best Watercolor- Northstar Watermedia Society Award at the State Fair.

I enjoyed abstracting my beautiful stand of tulips in this spring painting.
I wanted you to feel the movement of the breeze, and the blossoms and leaves twirling in a playful manner.
The checkerboard effect adds interesting diagonal shapes and colors to divide up the background.

Enjoy this floral show in the garden as you view these four perky petaled flowers. The light shining on the petals are described as abstract dabs. Stems and leaves create a textured dark background that set off the blooms.
When framing, consider a black mat next to the image first to extend the visual image and whatever you desire afterwards.

In our garden, this poppy painting is a beautiful effort at creating motion in a subject that remains rooted to the ground. The abstract texture of the sky foiled against the floral tangled landscape seems like the whole scene is in action. The colors, blue and orange, are opposites on the color wheel and really grab you with their color intensity. Then as the shadows creep over the blooms to add variety of color and depth, one wonderful blossom suddenly becomes the star.

Hope you enjoy this floral display of pansies! It is set off beautifully in the sunshine, radiating color with prisms of light originating from the crystal vase. Dark shadows allow for the tender, fragile, yellow petals to be back lit. A layer of pastel colored watercolor, adding luminous glowing color to the petals is especially noticed in the shadows. This image warms my heart and making me happy! It is also an award winner. This painting received a Merit Award at the NorthStar Watermedia Society Annual Member Exhibition, Mahtomedi, Minnesota, April 2017.

I love making a path of light into my paintings, as sunlit areas add to this lovely canoe scene. Here a group of figures make landfall after traveling winding rivers and lakes in warm summer weather. I lifted exciting reflections that dance across the water, moved lovely colors here and there and placed large expanses of deep dark colors on this luscious paper surface. I enjoyed creating this lovely Minnesota vacation scene.

I love to make joyful carousal paintings and use great value ranges of light and color such as displayed in this scene. High Steppers is a lively, colorful, ornate, full sheet view of a carousal that resided in Woodberry, MN for awhile. It displays three horses across the merry-go-round platform. Beautiful lights adorn the inside and outside panels of the ride in lovely trails of color and blinking lights. Calliope music often attracts the children to the midway so they can ride the painted animals that go up and down galloping around and around.

I spotted this wonderful cluster of small white tea roses glowing in the sun. I saw it in my neighbors flower garden patch on my walk near my Minnesota home. I enjoy color - so I enhanced the petal colors to gleam with reflected colors and shadows and I also made the background foliage to come forward and rearward within the painting.
The actual flower is to be enjoyed as a macro that goes off the paper on all four sides. What a joyful experience it is to paint flowers!

The celebration of the 10th year Anniversary of the Minnesota Legacy Amendment by the Five Wings Art Council has happened, Wednesday, May 1, 2019 at Great River Arts, Little Falls, MN. Kathy Braud & husband were invited guests at the dinner, music, social time and recognition of the 11 participants who were chosen to represent FWAC..

It was a fun evening! Dress up time! They had a program, said nice things and had a slide show regarding each of us.
We learned a lot about the variety of activities showing up in all five counties. Money was well spent to get the projects going and produce such good rewards. Our local St Francis Music Center was awarded the Arts Organization of the Year...... and has many teachers and students.

The Black and White Restaurant catered a nice meal – and served a Legacy Chocolate Cake also!
Nancy Ratzloff, an artist & retired grade school teacher, was featured also from Morrison County.
A photo was professionally taken for the awardees.

Our gift awards were a beautiful greenish toned platter dish (hot glass) with a concentric circle of blue, winding thru it. Steven Weagel – hot glass artist made 10 of them. It has a small plastic stand, so I was able to stand up on the dining room table and see the information that is on the label.
Top Master Artist, Delina White, - received a very special necklace. She creates her work as a Native Apparel Designer and Beadwork Artist.

I was able to load the green glass platter onto my "press" area on my site, but it doesn't transfer to this discussion. Sorry!

This yellow wood house really looks like the antique it is. I love the blue shadows that describe the contours, insets and wood bric-a-brac. It has a front open porch, spindle railing and a red door. Picture a moody day with intermittent storms crossing Lake Superior. This is a time of the year when the weather is changing to freezing temperatures, the wind is blowing, and the trees and rocks hunker down. Low clouds push across the sky and drop their load of slush. My references were from a warmer day along the Minnesota shoreline but this windy stormy day was pure creation.

Latest news to share!

I attended the reception of the 26th Red River Watercolor Society Juried National Show held in Moorhead, MN near the sister city of Fargo, ND. Had a great time and enjoyed the paintings and visiting with the many artists in attendance. This was a show with artists participating from all over the USA and CA. Iain Stewart was the juror.

My work was also accepted into three other Juried Art Exhibitions in June 2019
.
Salute to the Arts - at Crossing Arts Alliance, Brainerd, MN, 6/14 - 7/6/2019 and Born to be Wild, - at the Jaques art Center, Aitkin, MN 6/28 - 8/24/2019
and The Great River Arts Juried Biannual Show, Little Falls, MN, 7/10 - 8/31/2019

I also applied my full sized floral, a new piece of art, to enter the Minnesota State Fair Fine Art Exhibit. Artists enter from all over our state and a system of choosing art does happen. We will be notified if it is going to be our art that we are to bring it to be viewed in person by the judge. Only a percentage of the total make it into the MN State Fair.

Summer art shows are wrapping up. I have several shows still in action in Minnesota for portions of August. The 26th RRWS National Juried Show is done Aug. 10, 2019
and I and my hubby will make a road trip and travel 150 miles west to get it.....

I am waiting on the hearing if I will participating in another art adventure at the Silverwood Park Gallery, Three Rivers Park District, in St. Anthony Village, in the Twin Cities, MN.
"The Nature of Disappearance." Nature is disappearing. Our job is to show folks what will be lost if we don't care enough to protect it.

Red River Watercolor Society has asked me to do their September 2019 art demo for the group. I will be demonstrating how to make light, middle and dark value studies - before painting - so one can avoid troubles....

I was invited to participate in a nice exhibition of artworks on the walls at Falcon Bank, St Cloud
and this Friday, Aug 9, will be an Art Crawl in downtown St Cloud
and I will have a site at the bank, out of the weather and will share my cards, some unframed w/c images and other smaller works with the public.
I hope you take-in opportunities like this in your own home areas, to feast your eyes on creations you might enjoy!
