Praying for a miracle right now, but know this, you do not need that foot! You will be fine without it. Take it from the proud owner of a prosthetic and my many friends that have prosthetics as well. We are happy, healthy and live amazing lives when the infection is cut out completely. You can thank me later.

Wound care doc has decided against hyperbaric after all. Sending me home to continue wound Care on my own and out patient care in his office. Not sure when I'll go home -tomorrow or next day. Enzyme being used is helping but still have a long way to go in healing. Could still lose foot but hoping for the best. No insurance doesn't help matters any! Please continue prayers. Latest update... I am home now as of last night, Jan 31st about 7pm. Not easy coming home. Getting up to bathroom is way more difficult than in hospital; have 25 feet or so one way to walk. Can only walk on heel of left foot, as tendons were exposed when debridement done during surgery. So can't walk on whole foot. Really not easy to do, even using walker! Doing wound care and IV antibiotics at home, too. No insurance or job, so don't have a clue how all this will get paid. Some meds have been donated, so very appreciative of that. All your prayers and healing thoughts are so very much appreciated!

Perry Correll...will keep you and your hubby in my prayers too. My sister was bitten by a brown recluse spider 20 or so years ago on both feet. One healed, the other didn't...lost her leg below the knee as a result. I pray your hubby's wounds heal. Medi-honey is a great product I have used on other wounds myself...works wonders, as does silvasorb gel. Unfortunately, they won't do for this trouble I'm having. Using santyl collagenase ointment on it, an enzyme that helps debride necrotic tissue and promotes good granulating tissue. Still in that process now, and hoping and praying this heals it. Praying that these efforts to save foot are not futile ones.

Thanks again to all my FAA family for good wishes, healing thoughts and prayers. Very much appreciated!!!

Marian

Janine Riley

Marian that sounds brutally rough - "right down to the tendons" . Is there a type of air boot that you can put on for when you have to walk.

The hospital has programs in place for people who do not have insurance or the means to pay.
They are supposed to inform you, but they don't .

Make some phone calls.

Prayer continues Marian!

Marian Bell

Thanks Janine! The hospital or wound care doc didn't suggest any kind of boot to use; only said I could walk on the heel; no weight on whole foot because of the tendons.
As far as the help in paying the bills, they supposedly couldn't find grant money or anything to help me. I'll have to go online and search for that myself, I guess. A local med group is donating the antibiotics and some supplies for at home wound care and IV antibiotics. A wound care nurse is coming once a week to help..gratis, I'm told. So that helps some.

Many thanks to all who have responded with prayers! My FAA family blows me away!!! Than you all! Keep the prayers coming!

Thanks for the suggestion, Suzanne! Might have to look into that. Don't know how it works.
Better day today; getting stronger every time I get up, but can't do a lot on my feet yet, as having to only walk on the heel. Hard to do. But, both my sister and I thought the foot's color and the wound looked better today. Wound care nurse comes in the morning so hopefully she will agree. Wound care doc appointment Tuesday. Hoping he will see improvement too.

Again, thankss so much to everyone who is keeping me in their prayers! Prayers are powerful!! Thank you all. Your prayers and healing thoughts are greatly appreciated! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! Love you all!

So, on Wednesday 2/13/19, my wound care doc appointment didn't go as well as I'd hoped. He is still predicting that I will lose foot. But, he did give me a two week return appointment, giving it some more time to heal with IV antibiotics and topical treatment with Santyl, an enzyme which helps in debriding the dead/gangrenous tissue, or Silvasorb gel to continue the same. He hadn't seen it a couple of days earlier this week on Monday when a home health care nurse came to do wound care, check vital signs, draw blood, etc. It was swollen that day and reddened for some reason. Hadn't been elevating it for some reason for a couple of days, and the nurse said that may account for it. So elevated it more day and night. Helped! Went to Infectious Disease doc on Tuesday. He said he didn't see something, I don't know what he called it, that would indicate it was getting worse. Gave me a four week return appointment to give the IV antibiotics he prescribes more time to work. So, next day, wound care doc is basically saying just the opposite! Confusing, to say the least! But, I think it is getting slightly better still. It could just be wishful thinking, I know, or reality! Time alone will tell! Please continue prayers for me! It ts greatly appreciated! Thank you all so much!!

Marian, I'm surprised the doctor voiced that prediction. I just want to tell you, they are so often wrong. Tests can be wrong too. Just this past week somebody I'm close to underwent a CT scan because a mass was found on one of his kidneys during an ultrasound and the report stated that it was very likely carcinoma. After two weeks of sweating it out for the CT scan to be done and the results, he learned that there was nothing there at all. The ultrasound was wrong. I've had the same thing happen to me.

So fire up your inner healing powers and do all you can (as you're already doing), and prove that doctor wrong!

Marian Bell

Just an update...

Went to wound care doc today (2-27-19). He was pleasantly surprised to see some pink granulating tissue coming in now! Told him I decided to switch to the Silvasorb gel to see if there would be any more improvement with it than with the Santyl he'd said to use in the hospital. He said at the last appointment that I could switch products if I couldn't afford the Santyl, which is around $300 a tube; so, no, can't afford it. The Silvasorb is much cheaper by comparison.Only used the silvasorb for 3 or 4 days when seeing pink tissue on Sunday. Home health care nurse saw it Monday...also pleasantly surprised! There's a tad more pink each day now!

He's still a bit skeptical about full healing though. During surgery they had to expose the tendon (plantar fascia) so he's not sure if the tissue will form over it as it should be or not. Sounds like if it doesn't more surgery might be involved to cover it. Not sure what he was thinking. Didn't really go into that. Personally, I'm looking for full healing, not cutting off anything! And, hopefully no other surgery either.

Thank you all for your continued prayers and support. I really appreciate it! God Bless You!

Very good to hear that you are going in to the direction of improvement Marian.

So I was talking to a friend in the medical field regarding wound care and difficult healing.

Research Manuka honey. May not be the time for it now - but down the road ( or others reading) may consider an alternative to pricey medicines that they can not afford.

Of course this is NOT medical advice, just food for thought .

Than you all so very much for your concern, well wishes and continued prayers! It's all so much appreciated!

Abbie: I hope you're feeling better now, too! You've also been in my prayers.

Janine: I know about Mnuka honey, too. My wound care doc introduced me to MediHoney which is the best form of honey for healing, coming from manuka honey. Have used it on other wounds, but was told to use the Silvasorb which has silver molecules in it to help fight germs, too. The two products are both debriding and healing agents, keeping the wound moist too, but doc thought the silver is better for this, at least for now.

Thank you all for your continued support and prayers! You're all in miine, too!

Keep up the good fight Marian. Stay positive I just have gone through this with my buddy who is late 30's and diabetic. He had below his knee taken, a year ago now back again for above the knee due to not taking care of himself and working to hard. He stays positive and keeps on, so keep that chin up and take care of yourself. Prayers sent

Marian Bell

So, yesterday when the Home Health nurse came for a visit things seemed to be looking up. There is a bit more pink tissue forming and the wound has decreased somewhat in size. It started out at 4.5cm by 6cm she said. Yesterday, it measured 3.5cm by 4.5cm! YAY!!! It's smaller! I'll take it as being a step in the right direction!

Today, the wound care doc was not impressed! He continues to tell me that I am going to lose the foot! I'm so tired of him saying this! He continues to tell me to seriously consider what to do. I told him, again, I am not ready to throw in the towel and let him or anyone else simply cut off my foot when I see good tissue starting to come in and the wound is getting smaller. But, he continues. Now he is saying just because the wound is getting smaller doesn't mean it's getting better! He said he would see if the vascular doc can do anything more to improve blood flow. Told him they did angiogram in hospital and put in balloon to open up vessel. But he thinks more needs to be done. In the meantime, they used a TheraHoney Foam Flex pad on it after he debrided the necrotic tissue and exposed more plantar fascia tendon. Have no idea if incoming tissue will cover that, or if that itself is going to cause something more. If simply exposing that tendon will put me in a position where I have no choice at all. I don't know. I see the infectious Disease doc on Thursday to see about continuing the IV antibiotic. Will just have to go from there. I'm not ready to give up, though!

Please keep up the prayers! I need them!

Elisabeth Lucas

Can you get a second opinion? Remember they get paid a lot for surgery!

Marian Bell

Frankly, I wouldn't know who to see, Elisabeth. This doc is one of the best in wound care, if not the best. The Infectious Disease doc will render another opinion on Thursday. Will just have to see what he says.Believe me, I know surgery and hospitals are expensive, especially with no insurance or job!

Marian Bell

Today's update...the Infectious Disease doctor was much happier about how the wound is healing than the wound care doctor! He says he tussles with the other doctor all the time about what he says to patients; he is very pessimistic, although a very good doctor. Anyway, found out today that I was on the IV antibiotics for the bone infection I had, not for the wound itself. Didn't know that. He says that at this time there is a 90% chance that the bone is fully healed. And, I have been on this antibiotic for 6-8 weeks and shouldn't be on it any longer. Didn't think I needed antibiotics anymore at all. So, he removed the PICC line and told me I don't need to see him again, unless things get worse again. He definitely did not think there was any need at this time to have my foot cut off! (Total disagreement with the wound care doc!) He can tell I'm taking care of it and am more interested in pursuing total healing, which I am, of course. Actually, kind of disappointed to be released from his care, but if there isn't any antibiotic needed any longer, no point in going to him.

I thought there was more improvement today from yesterday. Looked like more pink tissue underneath the exposed tendon. He did confirm that the white fibrous tissue I now see after the wound care doc debrided it again Tuesday is tendon. But, the wound looks smaller still even just from yesterday. Not as much dark tissue present, which could just be dried blood from the debriding Tuesday, as it bled quite a bit when doing that. Don't know for sure about that, though. Anyway, personally, I still think we are making strides in the right direction, that is, towards full recovery!

Please keep up the prayers! I know they are helping! God has His healing hands on me! I know that! And, I am offering prayers of thanksgiving for everyone praying for me! Thank you all so much! Your positive comments help lift my spirits so very much!

Marian

Peggy Collins

Yes, yes, yes!!! I'm very happy to read all this good news, Marian. That is just fantastic. I know what you mean about being kind of disappointed to be released from the one doctor's care...maybe you feel like he's kind of a security blanket, but to be told that you don't need to see him anymore is excellent news!

May you continue making progress in your healing and show that other doctor what's what! :-)

Susan Maxwell Schmidt

It has been my experience, and I have a TON of it, that the best doctors are only the best doctors because they've told everyone else they are. I strongly suggest you find another since it is apparent other experts in the field disagree with the "best doctor's" diagnosis.

I have had the "best" doctors recommend unnecessary surgery completely unrelated to my MPS, boast to me how their procedure would succeed where all others failed (it didn't and I ended up in emergency surgery because it didn't), wait six months after seeing me to tell me I might have cancer, tell me the only place I could have a procedure done was the clinic they invested in (it wasn't, though it was twice as far from me in the next state), and that I don't have anything remotely related to exactly what I have. This is nowhere near a complete list.

Decided not to go to the wound care doc today since he ticked me off so much at my last visit. Still considering finding another doc.

Wound continues to get smaller; much smaller since last doc visit, but not well yet. Pink tissue is getting closer to the level of normal skin now and bleeding a bit when I remove dressings. So there is that sign that blood is getting to it. Read something recently saying that wounds that bleed, heal; ones that don't bleed, don't heal. So, bleed!

Those of you praying for me, please keep it up! I do believe that prayers help! Thanking God everyday for everyone praying for me, and praying that He blesses all with whatever your needs are! Thank you all so much!

Thank you all so much for your continued thoughts and prayers. It is so uplifting for me! Especially after being stuck at home for so long, without being able to get out very easily. Some days get very tiresome and lonely just waiting for the wound to heal. Hoping it will be completely well soon. Thanks again for all your prayers!

It has come to my attention thru one of our FAA members who has contacted me directly about my condition, that maybe I need to provide another update, as I have not done that in a while.

My wound continues to heal. Not quite "there" yet, but getting there. As yet, I have not returned to my wound care doc since he got me so royally ticked off during that last visit. That one visit cost me between $400-$500, and I came out depressed and angry. Can't see going back to him when he continues to recommend cutting off my foot, instead of continuing to give it time to heal completely, and having to pay him a small fortune for that advice! That appointment was on March 14th, and it has continued to heal in the meantime with the wound care that my sis and I do everyday. To say I have learned a little something about wound care in recent years, with this and other wounds I've had to deal with, is an understatement! Anyway, it is improving.

As for the financial assistance I have needed in paying my $62,000+ hospital bill...when I did not receive a third bill earlier this month, I went online to their website, keyed in the statement number, and couldn't find it. Nothing came up, as it had before. Puzzled, I called the hospital's billing office and was informed that I had a ZERO balance! I now owe nothing! She told me she wasn't at liberty to discuss the how/why it happened that way, but I owe nothing! Even if I somehow find a way to pay it off, I owe nothing!

I called them in February and told them I couldn't pay it;asked for a discount/payment plan. They would give a 40% discount, but it all had to be paid at one time. No way I could do that I told them. Same thing last month. Was told then that I'd get a third bill, but after that it would go to collections. Instead, this month, April, time for a third bill, I was told that after the second bill it went to this other '"care" account, not sure what it was actually called, but it sounded to me like some sort of charitable funding account. In Feb they told me the hospital is a privately owned for-profit hospital, and as such, did not do charitable funding. Same thing last month. You can probably guess how worried I've been about it. Thought about setting up a GoFundMe account, but haven't for one reason or another. Also looked for government grant money/local assistance, to no avail. You can imagine my surprise, total shock to be told I owe nothing!!!!

I have been praying over this since receiving the first bill, asking God to find a way to help me find the money to pay this. Guess His answer was to pay it for me! Glory to God in the Highest, as they say!

It made for a much happier Easter than I had expected! Wanted to make it to church that day, but finally decided not to go to Mass since there are so many people there that day. I feared being stumbled on or knocked over by folks at church, so chose to listen to it on the Internet, instead of getting in the midst of a large crowd. I did however, manage to go out for a late lunch that day. That was the first time I'd been out of my house and experience sunshine since my last doc's appointment a couple of days after the wound car doc's when I was taken off the antibiotic. Was very nice to see something other than my living room!

Hope you all had a very Happy Easter or Happy Passover, which ever one you celebrate! And, again..thank you all so much for your prayers! It means a lot to me!

Just to follow up for those who are still following this thread:

Still healing! Getting smaller every time wound care is done. Still looks healthy with pink tissue coming in and closing up. Dark necrotic tissue is pretty much gone, thank God! Used to be more rectangular in shape; then eventually took on an arrow shape. Now as it continues to get smaller, it's a very erratic, jagged-edged shape. Not too far from being well, but not quite there.

Had to go to my 'regular' doc to follow up on the meds I'm now taking since my foot surgery in January. Have been diagnosed with high blood pressure now. Pills are making me a little whacky...fatigued, and hearing my heartbeat in my left ear, plus some other side effects. Also beating more rapidly than usual, making me feel a bit nervous. Concerned me, so went to doc. He changed one of the meds, and stopped another one too. Feeling better already after just a couple of days! Not hearing heartbeat as strongly and it has slowed somewhat. Not driving me as nuts as I was! Hopefully, it will eventually subside to a point where I don't hear it anymore. Have also been doing some light exercises t see if they might help. Seems to be doing that.

Able to do more for myself, including some actual cooking, which I haven't been able to do earlier on when I couldn't stand on my foot because of the wound. Not painful to stand on it and walk now, so I am able to do some more. Still trying to stay off of it as much as possible, though. Just don't think I should be on it too much. Anyway, it is getting better. And, I'm getting out a bit on the weekend with my sister for Sunday lunch. Nice to see something other than my living room and computer!

Thanks so much for your continued prayers! It means so much! Be assured, I will let you know when it is healed!

Just want to say yet again, how much I appreciate all of your comments and prayers! I am still in healing mode. At the rate it's going, it may be another month before being fully closed, but at least it continues to improve! Still healthy pink tissue in the wound bed; no necrotic, dead tissue, thankfully! Just has to finish closing up.

Did manage to get out to eat with my sister over the Memorial Day weekend. Also did my own grocery shopping for first time since beginning of year! Nice to be able to select what I wanted instead of giving my sis a list to make those decisions for me! Hadn't been feeling like I was able to drive the motorized cart around the store till just last week. So did that Friday. Then ate out each day Saturday thru Monday, meeting cousins for lunch Monday. Has been a memorable Memorial Day weekend! Nice to get out of the house each day, but also wore me out! Not used to being on my feet a whole lot right now, or getting out each day. Taking it a bit easier the rest of this week, although have done some basic household chores and still trying to stay off my feet as much as possible to keep any reversals from occurring. Hope you all had a nice Memorial Day holiday!

Again, thank you all for your continued concern and prayers! It means so much to me! May God Bless you all with His marvelous graces, love and peace and give you all whatever it is you need in your lives!

Love you all!

6/19/19 Thank you, Peggy for asking about me! And Michael and Kathy for your continued thoughts! Just noticed this in the feed tonight. Sorry I haven't updated again in a while.

Still healing at the moment. Wound continues to get smaller, but very slowly. To say I just wish it would close up is an understatement!!!! But, at least it is healthy pink tissue there and no longer gangrenous! Hallelujah to that! Just taking its sweet time closing. At this point, I would guesstimate the size as being roughly the diameter of a half-dollar coin, if anybody remembers those! It isn't round like a coin, but more like a jagged edged arrow. It started out roughly 2 inches by three inches, so has gotten much smaller. As I said, just taking its sweet time closing up!

Still trying to stay off of it as much as possible, but doing way more for myself, too. And, getting out to eat on Sundays plus a little grocery shopping with my sister. Riveting stuff, right! But,at least I am doing more! Believe me, when it is well, I will let you all know!

As always, I appreciate the prayers that so many of you have said for me! It means a lot! I pray for all of you everyday, too! Thank you, thank you, thank you!

7/28/19 Hello everyone! It occurs to me that I haven't updated recently, so for anyone still checking on me..
..
Hate to say it, but my foot is still not well yet! Still healing! Wound is much smaller and closer to being closed up, but not there yet! It has come from roughly 2" by 3" to now being about an inch long and the width of my pinkie finger at its widest point. It is now an odd-shaped, off-center bowtie shape (if that makes sense) instead of the rectangular shape it was for so long. Has not been gangrenous for a couple months or longer, but have noticed the spot between my toes that was feeding it is still a little dark, grayish looking. So not completely out of the woods yet. Needless to say, still treating both areas in an attempt to get it completely well. Never thought it would have taken this long, as it started in January. Tired of sitting around most of the time, watching TV doing wound care and occasionally posting new things on FAA. Glad to have made a few sales this year; more than usual for me. Am getting out a bit, mostly to lunch with my sister a couple days a week and some grocery shopping, but am still trying to remain off my feet as much as possible. Been much too hot to get out much when you have a wound on the bottom of your foot!

Again, as I always say, thank you all so much for the prayers offered for me! I do greatly appreciate them! I continue to pray for all who have prayed for me, too! Hope God has blessed you all a million times! Will appreciate continued prayers if you are so inclined! Again, thank you for your concern and kindness!

Just thought I'd post another brief update, as it has been awhile since last one.
Still healing, but wound is very, very small now; barely the size of the white part of my fingernail and very little depth to it! It has been that way a couple of weeks or so, so still closing very slowly. But, it is closing!

Still staying off my foot as much as possible as I am afraid too much walking around could cause a setback to a wound on the bottom of my foot. Not driving yet, either for the same reason. You don't realize how much physical exertion it takes to drive a car until you have trouble with a foot, ankle, knee or hip! Makes a difference. Getting out with my sis on weekends and doing some light grocery shopping. One day soon, I hope, I'll be able to get back to what was once "normal" and not just sitting around!

Thank you all who have continued to pray for me! I pray for God to bless you all everyday! Thank you!

Just thought I'd let you all know, I have finally gotten rid of the last 'speck' of that gangrenous wound!!!!! Still have a small indentation in the skin where that speck was. Don't know if it will eventually fill in with tissue or will be what it is. Not an open wound though.Hallelujah!!! Also still have a hole between my big toe and next one, but it also isn't bleeding or a wound bed; is covered with skin. Don't know if it will eventually fill in or not either, but if it does, will probably take awhile. The worst is healed though! Thank God! And thank you all for all your prayers and concern! It's helped me get through it! Now, still have remnants of a big blister on the other foot healing, so not completely done with wound care!!

Though I am still cautious about getting out and about and overdoing things, I have finally gotten away for a few days for the first time in three years. A friend's daughter got married last weekend (Nov 2nd) outside of Atlanta, so my sister and I went up there for the wedding. Then went down to Callaway Gardens (aso in Georgia) for a couple of days before coming back home. That's where I went to a butterfly conservatory trying desperately to get some good photos of the butterflies. They weren't very visible the first day we went, but went back the next day and those butterflies were all over the place! They were totally amazing to watch! And totally frustrating trying to get photos! But, I did get a few good ones I'll post soon. Also had a brief 'hike' to a beautiful little chapel there with some gorgeous stained glass windows. That hike was a little hard on my feet; both were a bit swollen on the bottoms, but doing okay now that I'm home. Put feet on ice packs to help them; has worked well.

Will eventually post some of the photos I took at the gardens, but have to edit pics I took at the wedding to post on Facebook for my friend before I put more stuff on FAA, though.

Hope you are all doing well where you are. Keep safe and warm during the frigid cold spell moving across the country the next few days. Hope it isn't a sign of things to come this winter!

Thank you all once again for your prayers and concern for me. It has been truly appreciated and most humbling to see that so many "strangers" could care so much for someone they've never met! Totally appreciate my FAA family and friends! I pray for all of you everyday in thanksgiving for all your prayers which have gotten me through this trying time! God Bless you all with His glorious love, joy and peace and may He give you all whatever you need in your lives!

As the old year closes and a new one begins, I just want to thank everyone on here for the continued prayers throughout the year! I do believe in the power of prayer and do believe all the prayers from folks on this site have helped my gangrenous wound heal. It is no longer an open wound at all! There is still some reddening of the tissue, but does not seem to be infected. Still a hole between the big toe and next one, but is covered with skin, not a bleeding wound. Not sure if it will ever completely fill in, but am happy it is not an open wound.

Still dealing with the remnants of a rather large blister on the other foot, but it is slowly healing. Hard to believe the gangrenous wound healed first!

I thank God every day for each and every one who has prayed for me, and that He blesses you all a million times, giving you whatever it is you need! May 2020 bring good health, happiness, love, joy and peace to all my FAA family and friends! God bless you all! Happy New Year!

Hi Marion,
God hears the cries and answers the calls of all His children. He acts in His own timing no ours.
For the new year, Happy New Year! Be healed in the mighty name of Jesus.
Wear soft and comfortable shoes, don't care about attractiveness of shoes. What is important is that the shoes are comfortable, flexible and has adequate space for your feet.
Try to prevent any other wounds to feet, and blisters to toes and feet, especially form tight shoes.
I pray in the mighty name of Jesus, that adequate circulation be restored completely to both your feet and throughout your whole body.
Amen!!!!!!!!!!
