Learnings From Covid-9-crisis?

What can we learn so far from this worldwide crisis as creative people? I think it teaches us to concentrate and focus on our own voice as creatives. The world stands still at the moment ... or will stand still for the weeks or months to come (although it will be a stressful time for all the ill people and helping people in the health system). The crisis as a chance for focusing on the important things? ... focusing on the inner voice as a creative?

True. It also teaches the humanity to respect our God Given friends, THE Animals and their habitat The Nature, and to stop abusing them and killing them either for food and/or as a mean of making money by selling them. Maybe it was a punishment for those who terribly abused the wild animals sold at the wild animal market in Wuhan. But at the same time they are very well taken care of too in China. Another form of abuse is hunting for animals. This is a targeted killing of animals who have done nothing wrong to humans. Why to kill them? The only answer is the pleasure of killing. I'm sure those do that, sooner or later being punished by different means. Slaughter Houses is another terrible way to kill animals for food. Those who are involved in this "business are also being punished sooner or later. As for the meat eaters, they punish themselves by abusing their own bodies and their well being.

As someone who works from home, I don't see much changing for me in that regard.
Although, it is interesting to see people talk about being at home as some sort of foreign concept.
What to do? What to do?

Boredom is good.
People are too eager to do a whole lot of nothing.

Artistically speaking, recent events have only encouraged me to trust my creative voice all the more.
We are in a period of transition; fertile ground for creation.

as far as i'm concerned, i've been social distancing my entire life. i'm finally trending.

and the only real difference is that everything is closed, everyone expects everyone else to have the virus, my hands have never been cleaner. i touch my face more than i thought, and usually just before i wash my hands making it too late anyway. and that i'm getting medicine ahead of time.

beyond that, if i didn't watch the news, i never would have known any difference, because other than the walk in the morning, which is usually devoid of people, i don't go into town, i would see less traffic but that's it.. so creativity wise, its the same. and as long as the site is running and the printer is printing, maybe i'll get some sales.

One lesson is you have to take responsibility for your own safety. Don't expect slow to respond government leaders to be looking out for you. They are more interested in optics and the economy over the lives of individuals.

I saw someone on TV this morning talking about everyone (now that got more time on their hands) to video chat with at least 5 friends today. Friends they haven't talked with in years. Me being 60, most of my older friends probably can't video chat, but I'm going to make an effort to give a few of them a call to say "hi".

The gym was closed this morning. Now it is just the road and me.

My marketing ideas are getting traction. I could do well financially in here.

All of that aside, I worry about my family. We are all on lock down. Particularly not getting anywhere near my 80 y/o parents.

I have decaf, will sit and wonder.

It's a New World Order, and it will take time to adjust. I will try to take it just one day at a time and continue to do what I know how and adapt to the situation, right now it's to fluid for any more self imposed drastic changes than what's been thrown at us, so keeping things normalized is important.

Creative wise I have started selling my Art on Ebay again and New is printing my own work in 13" x 19" prints, I have some Corona Virus Art as well, this makes me feel I have complete control over my art work.

I was thinking of this same question earlier. Creatively, I guess I don't know. What I do know, is that people have lost their minds. Either they are idiots in their buying , or they don't care about their fellow man, or both. I went in to town to get a couple of items, and wanted to see just how bad it really was at the stores. The OTC med aisle was elbow to elbow with people who, I am not kidding, were reaching in to boxes as staff tried to stock shelves, without even looking at what they were grabbing. Entire aisles were cleared of food, cleaning supplies etc.
While work has taught me to expect stupid, and be prepared, I am certainly not a "prepper." That said, anyone who isn't constantly prepared for 2-4 weeks of survival food and water wise, needs to rethink things. And while I like to shoot, and shoot competitively, so I always have a good amount of ammo, I wish I had more. Not because I think there will be looting and rioting in my area, but because people are idiots and buying it all up in a panic and driving up prices, which is making me cancel competitive shoots and leagues I was going to do. Frustrating. This whole thing is frustrating. While I understand the concerns, I also think this is way, way overboard in response by most people. And, if everyone planned for this possibility, all the time, we wouldn't be in this mess.

Ironically, less human activity means less greenhouse gases pumped into the atmosphere. Maybe, we can learn to live with less. More people might turn to art and painting as something to do, whilst they are isolated.

@Peter, that's what I plan on doing when I'm a little more in the mood. I'm going to learn about my new iPad that I haven't had time to check out, and learn Procreate. All kinds of fun awaits. I might even get a chance to read some books for a change.

As far as learning goes...I think it's a good time to separate my needs from my wants. And to learn patience.

"as far as i'm concerned, i've been social distancing my entire life. i'm finally trending." LOL!
Mike, we are no longer members of an exclusive club. Can't really say I'm social distancing because whenever I work outside, kitties, doggies, "wild" turkeys and our 6 deer (2 fawns, 2 does, 2 bucks) follow me around the gardens. The resident wildlife believe they are members of the home pack and aren't afraid of the more domesticated critters who live here.

Gardening is a creative process and I've been happy as a clam staying home nurturing the plants and designing new garden beds. I've been doing supply runs only when necessary long before this virus invaded. The difference now is that I also shop for old people who are afraid to leave home. The other difference is I don't guilt myself for playing in the garden since we are officially encouraged to stay home.

I'm a minimalist.

It is rare for me to have back ups.

This event has taught me to keep my home stocked with basic items :/

As far as hand-washing etc, I've always been germ aware & safe.

I'm thrilled to witness the public awareness & new precautions.

Hopefully this awareness & safe practice will continue!

I'm sorry Zal, I'm a beef eater and I enjoy my chicken and fish as well and yet I love animals and don't abuse them, I don't think the consumption of animal protein should be characterized as abuse, what do most animals do, they hunt and kill animals to survive.

Abuse of animals and inhumane treatment of animals is a totally different think, apple and oranges in my view, respectfully.

There was a time when I would slaughter my own rabbits and eat them, I don't do that anymore, that does not mean I won't eat a rabbit.

I won't slaughter my own cow , I love cows as animals, they are beautiful animals and so peaceful, and yet I love my steak as well. I'm greatfull to our God given friends as well as you mention.

Now back to Coronavirus, it's teaching me to appreciate that life is not forever as we know it, it teaches me that greed is not good, it teaches me that life is fragile, it teaches me that materialism can vanish in an instant, it teaches me to be calm and reflect on the things I know to be true, it teaches me that humanity can be cruel or be extremely selfish or not, it teaches me to develop good character in times of crisis and to maintain a level head and calm head, it teaches me faith,it teaches me hope, it teaches me to endure, it teaches me no man is an Island.

The lesson to be learned, IMO, is that if there is a god, he's a callous oblivious capricious SOB, and I regret the years I spent as a Christian. Because for a few months, I actually felt some financial stability, but now that's gone. I'm not attacking others who believe. I'm just saying that I no longer do. For all kinds of reasons, but now especially.

Well my second business is all set up online, but now their ability to function is shutdown.

I have shut off all ads for a few weeks to market the second business.

Facebook is going to be hurting as we all pull ads.

The dominos are falling fast.

One less reason for me to be spending any money.

My savings are skyrocketing into the 100s of dollars this month alone. But I need intake of money to make that so.....irony knows no bounds.

Well David it's a fluid situation that is rapidly changing, I to set up my 2nd business and even opened my closed ebay store with a little new branding, my financial outlay was really just the store subscription of $59.00 for the year.

This will actually be a savings as well when the unsold listings get renewed at the rate 100 per month for FREE, otherwise it's .35 cents per each listing every month.

There are eyes on my work as Ebay would like 8% of my action for promoting my work, they get nothing if I don't sell and I pay zero in advance. I have it all set up, just need an order so I can do my own postage and labels, I've decide to go with the FREE USPS small shipping triangles and FREE priority shipping to my customers to keep it all simple.

There comes a time in the day where I disconnect from the reality and all the "NEWS" that comes at me.

I realize that I must maintain as much of what I can of my daily routine and immerse my self in calm, serene and peace full environment.

The future comes at us just one day at a time. I only need to deal with the things of the day.

So here is what I learned today that has given me comfort knowing that major cities across the country could be ordered to shut down.

Only essential services will be allowed to operate. I wasn't sure exactly what essential services they meant.

This list makes me breath a BIG sigh of relief because my business falls in several of these categories and should allow me and Alina to go about our business, of course following the CDC recommendations, we have also taken measure to ask customers questions about there health and that we do practice social distancing even if we come out to there home to work.

We will not knowingly go to a customer's home who shows signs of cold or flu or if they have recently travel abroad or been in contact with same.

These are what essential services are, according to some major cities, in my state Florida:

Gas stations, auto supply stores, auto repair shops and related facilities

Pharmacies

Grocery stores, farmers markets, food banks and convenience stores

Liquor stores

Restaurants (only for delivery, takeout and drive-thru)

Hardware stores and plumbers

Contractors and other tradesmen, appliance repair personnel

Exterminators and other service providers

Landscape and pool care businesses, including residential landscape and pool care

Construction sites and engineering and architecture firms

Banks and related financial institutions including insurance and accounting services

Phone and computer sellers

Community benefit organizations on a case-by-case basis

Laundromats, dry cleaners and laundry service providers

Healthcare providers, hospitals, clinics and healthcare operations including research and laboratory services, medical wholesale and distribution, and dentists

Businesses that provide shelter and/or social services

Newspapers, television, radio and other media outlets

Businesses offering mailing and shipping services, including post office boxes

Airlines, taxis and other private transportation providers

Home-based care for seniors, adults or children

Assisted living facilities, nursing homes, adult day care centers and senior facilities

Pet supply stores

Veterinary offices

Police stations

Fire stations

Building code enforcement

Jails

Courts

Garbage/sanitation and recycling services

Public transportation (Muni, BART, subways)

Utilities (water, power and gas, telecommunications)

Certain city, county, state and federal offices

Funeral homes, crematoriums and cemeteries

Maintenance staff, cleaners, janitors and doormen

Manufacturing including food processing, chemical, pharmaceutical, agricultural, paper products, safety and sanitary products

are you on the list?

I'm like Kathleen. I'm finally trending as well. Social distancing is good in small doses, but not for too long. I enjoy some social interaction and helping people as well. Hearing the birds sing and so happy is music for the soul. Nature is a great pick me up. To see the flowers and fresh green springing forth is food for the eyes. Don't wait for your politicians for action or listen to the news. It is sheer poison. Now is a time to believe in yourself and bring your communities together. The Covid-19 is a wake up call for change and to be mindful. Things can't stay the same. The horrific animal trafficking has got to stop. Respect for all walks of life, including more support and funding for artists as well as being better stewards of the planet. There's no Planet B.

Thank you Tobias for this thread.

Like Mike S and others, I have been ... "social distancing" ... most of my life.

What this allows me to do now is continue to observe from the outside perspective that I have always used, and, from this perspective, I can only conclude that a sort of mass hysteria has kicked in, due to the high level of awareness that information networks have enabled.

When every second of every hour can be amplified with another update about another level of detail, repeated endlessly, all day, every day, every hour, everywhere, all the time, with no let up, ... the mind becomes hyper-aware of things that it never was aware of before. When a news trend kicks in, it is as though the trend is novel and unheard of.

Consequently, I have learned to ask questions like, "Why does the media not make a big deal out of 1,300 people PER DAY dying in America alone, from smoking?", ... "Why does the media not make a big deal out of 2,600 people PER DAY dying in America alone, from heart disease resulting from poor eating/exercising habits?", ... "Why no hype about the thousands upon thousands dying of alcohol-related causes?"

We seem to have socially-acceptable forms of risk taking that lead to countless deaths everyday, and yet people, as individuals, are not being allowed to judge risks for themselves and make their own decisions as to how much activity is safe for them or not.

Fear of the unknown causes panic, and panic causes wrongheaded decisions based on inadequate data. People need to be allowed to make their own life decisions.

I appreciate now when people are trying to avoid me when I'm on a walk :-)

I hope that those times will make people look at how different countries handle this crisis and will think more when they will vote next time to chose future leaders.

There are already many predictions how a world will look short term and long term when this will be mostly over. It would be interesting to compare those predictions with actual situation in 1 or 2 years.

I think more countries will simulate Chinese control system.

You see in that chart that China and Asian counties, which followed fast, hard and strict Chinese response, are doing much better than other countries.

How it will impact a world situation with human rights? - We will see.

I went to the grocery store and trying to keep my distance from everyone, I had five incidents where people got closer to me and to make matters worse were coughing and not even covering there mouths.

So when I hear social distancing as the solution, which I realize has it's benefits I also wonder to what extent it will help when people behave in this manner.
